Please I need further explanation as to H.Pylori being Carcinogenic.
Also is there an age predilection to Mammography as a Screening tool & how many times per year can you take up the Screening?
    Thanks in anticipation.

    1. Hi Dr. Hadassah,
H.pylori causes 2 types of cancers in the stomach. One of them is found in the middle and lower portions of the stomach called non-cardia gastric cancer. The other type of cancer it causes is gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma.

In the non-cardia gastric cancer, certain strains of H.pylori release a toxin which damages the structure of the cells in the area of the stomach continuously. The colonization of a part of the stomach by H.pylori bacteria leads to an inflammatory response by cytokines and other inflammatory mediators. Due to proliferation of lymphocytes following long term H.pylori infection, their is abnormal cell division which goes out of control giving rise to both normal and abnormal lymphocytes which can lead to gastric MALT lymphoma, though quite rare.

Regarding the age period for mammography, first of all, self examination is important and when you feel something is not right during self examination, then go for mammography. Mammography is radiation exposure though very little, it is also not very cheap for regular screening. The American Cancer Society recommends women from ages 40 to 44 years can choose to start mammography annually if they wish to do so but women aged 45 to 54 years should get mammograms every year, while women aged 55 years and older should have mammograms every 2 years, or can continue yearly screening.

Hope the brief answers help. Thanks.
