Normal blood pressure is widely regarded as 120/80mmHg. A precautionary gap labeled prehypertension for those beyond 120/80mmHg and less than 130/90mmHg existed as well. But in the first update to comprehensive U.S. guidelines on blood pressure detection and treatment since 2003, the category of prehypertension is eliminated.
High blood pressure is now defined as readings of 130 mm Hg and higher for the systolic blood pressure measurement, or readings of 80 and higher for the diastolic measurement. That is a change from the old definition of 140/90 and higher, reflecting complications that can occur at those lower numbers. Out of every 10 drugs sold in developing countries, a minimum of one is fake or substandard. This has led to tens of thousands of deaths, many of them of African children who received ineffective treatments for pneumonia and malaria, World Health Organization says.
